On your mark (dramatic pause). Get set (dramatic pause). Go! Goooo! Those were the words the lady in this picture spoke on May 9, 1957, the day the depicted race below took place. Imagine a time when race cars were natural and organic. Those were the days. There was nothing like racing on abandoned highways and broken-down interstates in the 1950′s. Drag racing was King in those days. If only we could go back…. Now, all we have are pictures like this to remind us. Etch this picture into your brain, kids; the good ole racing days will never come again. Never. My name’s Jack Johnson. I’m 97 years old, and you could say I’m a bit bitter about the direction drag racing is going in. This is Jack Johnson, signing off. God Speed! Vroom! (In my day we only spelled “vroom” with two “o’s”. None of this fancy 10 “o” garbage. Vrooooom. Come now, lassie.
